Publication Ethics & Malpractice Statement

Oto Rhino Laryngologica Indonesiana (ORLI) upholds the highest standards of publication ethics as outlined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and expects all parties involved in the publication process—including the Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, editors, reviewers, and authors—to adhere to these ethical principles.
All research involving human participants must comply with the Declaration of Helsinki, meet Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards, and receive approval from an appropriate ethics committee.

1. Duties of the Editor-in-Chief

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for ensuring the integrity, quality, and timeliness of the journal’s publications. Duties include:

  • Leading and coordinating the entire editorial and publication process.
  • Making the final decision on manuscript acceptance, based on editorial board and peer-review input.
  • Appointing, evaluating, and guiding editorial board members to ensure active and competent contribution.
  • Ensuring fair, unbiased, and timely handling of manuscripts.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of submitted manuscripts.
  • Ensuring the journal follows ethical publishing standards and COPE guidelines.
  • Retracting or correcting published articles when necessary (e.g., due to error, unethical research, duplication, or plagiarism).
  • Overseeing final editing, production, and quality assurance of published materials.

2. Duties of the Deputy Editor-in-Chief

The Deputy Editor-in-Chief supports the Editor-in-Chief in ensuring smooth editorial operations. Duties include:

  • Assisting in manuscript handling, editorial coordination, and publication scheduling.
  • Monitoring the progress of the peer-review and editing processes.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all submitted manuscripts.
  • Providing input on editorial board performance and policy improvements.
  • Recommending retraction or correction of articles when ethical violations or serious errors are identified.

3. Duties of Editors

Editors are responsible for evaluating submitted manuscripts objectively and professionally. Their duties include:

  • Assessing manuscripts based on originality, methodological rigor, clarity, relevance, and contribution to the field.
  • Ensuring all accepted manuscripts undergo thorough peer review by qualified reviewers.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of manuscript content throughout the review process.
  • Upholding accuracy, completeness, and clarity in published research, including adherence to journal guidelines.
  • Communicating editorial decisions and required revisions clearly to authors.
  • Recommending retraction or correction of articles with unreliable data, ethical violations, duplication, or plagiarism.
  • Completing editorial tasks in a timely manner and informing the editorial office of any delays or conflicts of interest.

4. Duties of Reviewers

Reviewers play a crucial role in maintaining the scientific quality of the journal. Their responsibilities include:

  • Providing objective, constructive, and timely evaluations of manuscripts.
  • Assessing scientific validity, methodological soundness, clarity, originality, and ethical conduct of research.
  • Reviewing revised manuscripts according to recommended corrections.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality and not sharing review materials with others.
  • Declining to review manuscripts where conflicts of interest exist (personal, academic, financial, or competitive).
  • Notifying the editor promptly if unable to complete the review by the agreed deadline.

5. Duties of Authors

Authors are expected to uphold the integrity of scientific publishing. They must:

  • Submit only original works that have not been previously published or submitted elsewhere.
  • Ensure the manuscript is free of plagiarism and fabricated or falsified data.
  • Follow journal guidelines and applicable ethical and legal standards.
  • Disclose any ethical approval and informed consent when research involves human participants.
  • Provide accurate and complete attribution of sources.
  • Ensure all listed authors made significant contributions to the work.
  • Notify the editor immediately if significant errors are discovered after submission or publication.
  • Agree that accepted manuscripts are published under a Creative Commons license as determined by ORLI, allowing appropriate non-commercial reuse with proper attribution.
